Update Tuesday July 13th -

We joined a discussion yesterday in the New York Times - on line - on China's efforts to build international television news channels.   This follows the launch of a new English language service by the Xinhua news agency and work underway to re-vamp and improve China Central Television's 10 year old English channel which earlier this year was renamed 'CCTV NEWS'.

Update June 8 -
From May 31st to June 6th, we were in New York capping a remarkable, new University of Hong Kong project.   A 2009-2010 University Teaching Development Grant in 'experiential learning', underwrote a student study trip which included visits to the headquarters of Bloomberg, NBC News, and ABC News in New York.  Seven of our most promising 'broadcast' journalists [five of them - Li Li, Liyi, Zela, Phillippa and Lorea - pictured above] joined me on the trip.  Thanks also to the Overseas Press Club for hosting a briefing for the students and to Human Rights Watch for not only a brief on their valuable work but a marvellous glimpse of the view from the HRW offices at the Empire State Building.  It was a first time in New York for several of our students.

Update June 11 -
We are in Beijing visiting again China Central Television's English channel and CCTV's News channels.  Consultation with CCTV focuses on how to make their news programming more dynamic and engaging within the content limitations that everyone recognizes will impede development. We are also pleased to report that two of our students Deirdre Wang Morris and Lorea Solabarrieta have been hired by CCTV to work in business and financial news.  Watch for them on CCTV News in July or August.
